PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – Cambodia’s cashew nut industry is positioning itself for significant growth in the Chinese market as new processing facilities come online and strategic partnerships develop, marking a pivotal moment for the Southeast Asian nation’s agricultural sector.
Strategic Processing Plant Developments Drive Market Access
The Cambodian cashew industry has gained momentum with several major processing facility investments aimed at capturing growing Chinese demand. Two companies are planning to establish a state-of-the-art cashew nut processing plant in Cambodia, aimed at meeting the surging demand in the Chinese market, following discussions with His Excellency Hem Vandy, Cambodia’s Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
This development builds on recent successes in the sector. A $12 million cashew processing plant being built by CSNC in Cambodia is expected to begin operations by March 2025. This plant will produce 40 tonnes of cashew nuts daily, targeting markets like China, Europe, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
Chinese Investment Creates Local Employment Opportunities
The expansion has already begun creating tangible benefits for Cambodian workers. Va Sokchea, a 39-year-old worker at a Chinese-invested Kampu Nuts Agro Product Co. Ltd. here in central Cambodia, has no longer migrated to work at a garment factory in the capital Phnom Penh since the cashew nut processing plant launched in early 2024.
Cambodia’s Growing Cashew Production Capacity
Cambodia’s cashew sector has demonstrated remarkable growth potential. Cambodia currently has about 700,000 hectares of cashew plantations. In the first five months of 2024, raw cashew nuts were the third most-exported products with nearly 540,000 tonnes, an increase of nearly 61 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.
The country’s processing infrastructure is expanding to meet demand. Cambodia has a total of 45 cashew processing factories, with 39 of them being small-sized and only six being medium-sized, indicating significant room for growth in processing capacity.
Market Dynamics and Pricing Trends
Industry leaders report improving quality and pricing dynamics. Recent market analysis shows raw cashew nut prices have increased substantially, while the focus shifts toward value-added processed products for international markets.
Strategic Importance for Cambodia’s Agricultural Sector
The cashew industry expansion represents a critical component of Cambodia’s agricultural diversification strategy. The partnerships with Chinese investors and the targeting of Chinese markets align with broader bilateral trade initiatives between Cambodia and China.
The development of processing capabilities domestically allows Cambodia to capture more value from its cashew production rather than simply exporting raw materials, supporting the government’s goals of industrial development and job creation.
Future Outlook
With new processing plants coming online and established Chinese investment in the sector, Cambodia’s cashew industry appears well-positioned to capitalize on growing Asian demand for processed nuts. The combination of expanded production capacity, improved processing infrastructure, and strategic market targeting suggests continued growth potential for this important agricultural sector.
The industry’s development also supports rural employment and agricultural diversification goals, making it a key component of Cambodia’s economic development strategy.
